Morecambe - Edmondson's Fish Shop

Every now and then I feature somewhere really special in this blog, and Edmonson's Fish Shop in Morecambe is one of those places.  You could easily miss it - Yorkshire Street is a small street set back from the Marine Road that most of the tourists walk along.
There's a wonderful display of really fresh fish. If Ray Edmondson didn't catch it himself he knows the person who did, and prices are much less than the supermarkets.

Inside there's cockles, mussels and whelks, as well as smoked fish.
They also sell salt cod:
The reason why I love this shop so much however is that they do the best Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps you'll find anywhere:
If you get your timing right you can even enjoy them still warm after being cooked.  On the wall you can see the last two shrimping boats in Morecambe (see here for more information)
This is how Ray still catches his shrimps, most are now got by tractor (see here for more details). He's got 50 years experience and I hope he can continue for a long time.  Previous visitors to the shop include Adrian Edmondson, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and Rick Stein.
I spent quite a while chatting to Ray and reminiscing about Morecambe (I used to work at the Winter Gardens). He's got some nice old photos of Morecambe in the shop. If you can't get there, I get his shrimps in the excellent fish stall in Nantwich Market. Ray now also sells his shrimps online (see link below).
